Why is lip health
so important?
By their very nature, lips are constantly exposed to harsh
and potentially damaging conditions. Not only does clothing
rarely protect them, but their delicate structure also makes
them vulnerable.
Compared to other parts of the body, lips are made of thinner
layers of skin with the outermost protective layer being the
thinnest of all. What’s more, with fewer oil glands than
elsewhere on the body and no sweat glands whatsoever, it’s
particularly difficult to keep lips naturally moist. Lips also
contain hardly any melanin – the natural pigment that
helps screen out the sun’s harmful rays, leaving them
exposed when outdoors and open to the elements.
As a result, moisture can quickly evaporate from our lips,
causing them to dry out, become sore and often lead to unsightly
chapping and embarrassing cracking.
